In 2023 India registered a marginal rise of 1.65% in coal imports to 212.24 million t in the January-April period of the ongoing fiscal period from 2023. India's coal import was 208.78 million t in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, according to data compiled by Mjunction Services Ltd.

During the January-April period of the current fiscal, the volume of non-coking coal imports was 136.47 million t, slightly lower than 136.90 million t imported during the same period last financial year in 2023, according to the data.

Coking coal imports were at 47.32 million t during the January-April 2023 - 2024, higher than 46.09 million t recorded in the January-April period of the financial year of 2023.

The coal imported in January through the major and non-major ports also increased to 19.81 million t, over 16.97 million t in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal.

Of the total imports in January, non-coking coal import was at 12.10 million t, against 10.01 million t imported in January 2023. Coking coal imports stood at 4.50 million t, marginally lower than the 4.74 million t imported in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal.

"The demand for imported coal in India has weakened in recent weeks. We expect this trend to continue in March in view of the ample availability of domestic coal at mine pitheads and thermal power plants," stated Mjunction Services MD, CEO Vinaya Varma.

According to the provisional data of the Indian government, the country's coal production in the January-April period rose to 784.11 million t over 698.99 million t during the same period in 2022 - 2023.
