Wheat Growers, a grain and agronomy cooperative in North and South Dakota, US, has loaded the first train from its Kennebec Grain Terminal. The 115-car train was loaded with soybeans.
“This is the first of many trains to load grain from our Wheat Growers facility and we are so excited to share this moment with producers in the Kennebec territory,” said Dale Locken, CEO of Wheat Growers.
“Producers in the are having a good year so far with excellent winter wheat and soybean yields. Now that the rail line is back in business, their crops will go by rail instead of being trucked out of the are to another location.”
Trains will travel to Kennebec on a refurbished rail line running from Chamberlain in the south of South Dakota. The rehabilitation was funded by private, state and federal funds. Wheat Growers built the US$40 million Kennebec grain and agronomy facility on the back of the rail rehabilitation project.
The grain terminal hosts a shuttle loader facility with a rail shipping capacity of 80 000 bushels per hour (2177.6 tph) with a continuous loop track. Combined with a total truck receiving capacity of 60 000 bushels per hour (1633 tph), the facility has the fastest dumping speeds in the industry, according to Wheat Growers.
The new site also has a total grain storage capacity of 4.08 million bushels (0.11 million t).
