Maritime Transport Ltd., a leading transport company in the UK, has purchased two Konecranes Noell NSC 644 E Straddle Carriers for container train loading and unloading at Birmingham Intermodal Freight Terminal (BIFT). The order was booked in April and the machines will be delivered in September 2019.

The straddle carriers will be diesel-electric machines stacking three-high with Konecranes Noell single-lift spreaders. Remote service support for two years, starting from the date of acceptance, is part of the contract. The contract furthermore includes an option for two more straddle carrier units.

Stuart Wardlaw, Fleet Director, said: “We are looking forward to receiving these two Konecranes Noell machines, which will improve service reliability and continue to drive the efficiency of the terminal as Maritime continues its development into rail.”

Two Konecranes Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes have been in operation in Birmingham since 2006, Maritime are pleased with their performance and Konecranes’ service support within the UK. Straddle carriers are not especially known in intermodal operations, but these Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers have the versatility to be very productive intermodal container handlers.
