Compact and rugged iron ore feeder reclaim hoppers that can efficiently handle 50 t bucket inputs from the world’s largest front-end loaders are being engineered for service in the toughest conditions globally by Australian mining technology innovator Transmin.

Transmin’s new Bonfiglioli-driven feeder hoppers fit outstanding shock and load capacity into compact spaces

The low profile relocatable machines feature custom-engineered Bonfiglioli combination Trasmital planetary and HDO helical bevel drives that achieve high torque densities in a compact space, with a rugged capacity to cope with the shock and impact of intermittent loads. Their reliability is further enhanced by alignment-free design and integrated heat protection.

One of the latest Transmin machines to be delivered recently will be used in an iron ore export stockyard application where it will be fed by giant front-end loaders depositing 50 t bucket loads into the reclaimer hopper, after which it will be transported at 2500 tph onto a stockyard conveyor.

“The whole reclaim hopper assembly in this instance weighed approximately 90 t when loaded onto the articulated heavy vehicle, mounted on a skid-frame so the unit can be moved to other locations in the future if required,” said Phil Gilbert, Trasmin’s Director – Capital Sales and Business Development. Transmin equipment is in service in more than 60 countries worldwide.

To facilitate the move and achieve compact performance, the system also incorporated a standalone electrical control system and an over-band tramp metal magnet located above the feeding conveyor belt to achieve a lower space requirement.

To achieve 2500 tph, this particular machine is driven by a 150 kw electric motor driving a Bonfiglioli Trasmital 318L1 planetary and Australian-assembled HDO 130 helical bevel drive. This locally engineered unit – which drew on the expertise of Bonfiglioli’s Customer Application Engineering (CAE) facility working with direction from Transmin’s specialist Engineering Division – achieves a final ratio of 186 357:1, delivering 193 kW at 1500 rpm, with 188 790 Nm rated torque at 50°C (220 MW and 320 000 Nm maximum torque).

“The helical and planetary drives are combined to extract the best performance characteristics of each type, so they can be integrated into a high performance, high torque density, optimum reliability compact unit that is further enhanced by forced cooling,” said Bonfiglioli Western Australian Manager Fred Whalley.

Gilbert says the Bonfiglioli unit was selected for this job because of a combination of advantages, including competitive cost, good delivery times, reliability.

He continued: “An ongoing relationship we have with them, part of which is the excellent service we receive from sales through to back-up onsite if required.”

Established in Perth, Western Australia in 1987, Transmin sets internationally recognised standards for mechanical equipment design and application, led by its specialist Engineering division and backed by its dedicated Project Management, Servicing and Parts divisions. Transmin’s Controls and Automation division delivers award-winning software solutions, specialising in remote equipment operation and plant integration.

Bonfiglioli this year celebrates 30 years in Australia, now with its purpose-built national headquarters of Bonfiglioli Transmission Australia in Sydney and New Zealand’s national headquarters in Auckland. Both HQs have invested millions of dollars in high product stocking levels and local assembly and engineering capabilities that can custom-design for projects nationally and internationally.

Bonfiglioli’s Trasmital 300 multipurpose planetary drives – renowned for their torque density and compact dimensions – can be coupled with the latest Bonfiglioli HDO Bevel Helical units engineered to produce outstanding reliability and torque densities to record values. Tailored to customer requirements through Bonfiglioli assembly and service facilities in Australia and New Zealand, the HDOs feature excellent torque distribution across their entire ratio range, with gear ratios laid out in close progression and the drives having a rugged capacity to cope with the shock and impact of intermittent loads. When combined with the 300 series Trasmital planetary, they are ideal in many slow moving applications where high output torque is required.
