INTERCARGO addresses the security risks in the MEG & Black Sea

Dry Bulk,

The company has issued a statement condemning maritime attacks and calling for practical safety steps to take place.

INTERCARGO is deeply concerned by the security situation in the Black Sea, Sea of Azov and Strait of Hormuz, and strongly condemns attacks on merchant ships, seafarers, and the civilian infrastructure needed to move essential commodities worldwide. We call on all parties to respect international law, protect seafarers and civilian shipping, and support practical steps to restore safe and reliable maritime access.

Sustained diplomatic engagement is urgently needed to prevent further loss of life and minimise disruption to dry bulk shipping, commodity supply chains, food security and the wider global economy.

Dry bulk carriers perform an essential civilian service, transporting wheat, maize and other vital commodities between producing regions and markets around the world. When ships and ports cannot operate safely, the consequences extend well beyond the immediate area, disrupting supply chains, increasing transport costs and placing additional pressure on global trade and food security.

The security situation in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov in recent weeks has further disrupted the movement of grain and other commodities, while security incidents and attacks in the Strait of Hormuz are continuing to place seafarers and merchant shipping at serious risk. The recent loss of a seafarer aboard the Cape Dao in the Strait of Hormuz is a stark reminder of the human cost of these risks.

Seafarers are civilians carrying out work that is vital to communities far beyond their trading routes. No crew should face attack while transporting grain or other essential cargoes.
