As part of the strategic cooperation agreement signed between SUMEC Marine Company Ltd. and DNV GL last year, SUMEC’s New Dayang Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and DNV GL have agreed on a joint development project (JDP) to update the Crown 63.5k bulk barrier design. The agreement was signed at the Nor-Shipping trade fair in Oslo.

The JDP will include the application of the new harmonised common structural rules (HCSR) to the design, as well as a focus on improving the energy efficiency of the design, particularly in the ship board machinery and electrical systems. Additionally, the JDP includes a more general evaluation of different propulsion systems for bulk carrier designs in general, in terms of future environmental requirements that can impact CAPEX and OPEX.

“The Crown 63.5k ultramax design has been very popular and successful with over 100 vessels built to date,” said Xu Gang, General Manager of SUMEC Marine Co., Limited.

“This JDP with DNV GL will enable us to continue to offer customers an attractive design, but with even higher energy efficiency, new smart features, and the latest standards. DNV GL, as the world’s leading classification society, has been an invaluable partner, through their innovative outlook and focus on safety, digitalisation, and efficiency.”

“We are very pleased to be working with New Dayang Shipbuilding on this project,” said Norbert Kray, DNV GL’s Regional Manager Greater China.

“New environmental regulations will put pressure on many owners to improve the performance of their vessels, while maintaining compliance to safety standards, and through this JDP we will work to help address these needs.”
