Peel Ports and dry bulk handling systems supplier Siwertell have been awarded the Best Ship Loading / Unloading System award at the International Bulk Journal Awards 2016 in London on 21 November.

The partnership’s unloading system at the £100 million biomass handling facility at the Port of Liverpool was recognised for its high efficiency and capacity, capable of supplying Drax power plant with up to 10 train loads of wood pellets per day.

The largest single decarbonisation project in Europe, Drax power station will reuse up to 3 million tpy of US-produced wood pellets.

To meet this demand, Peel Ports’ biomass handling facility was constructed using two fully-enclosed Siwertell 790-D screw-type ship unloaders with a berth capacity large enough to enable panamax vessels to be turned around quickly. The unloaders, each with a continuous rated capacity of 1400 tph, are fully enclosed, making them the best environmental choice for handling dusty cargo like wood pellets.

Peel Ports Group and Siwertell have a well-established relationship, with Peel Ports choosing the manufacturer 11 years ago to design, manufacture, deliver and install a similar Siwertell 790D at its Liverpool Grain Terminal, the UK’s largest grain import facility handling over 1 million tpy.

David Huck, Port Director at Peel Ports Group, said: “Our partnership with Siwertell goes from strength to strength and this latest award recognises the technological innovations both businesses have made to improve the port’s dry bulk handling capabilities. Siwertell has unique capabilities in the biomass market, offering screw-type unloaders and totally-enclosed conveying systems that can deliver unrivalled, high-efficiency handling of both biomass and other bulk cargo.”

“The improved efficiency and increased throughput capacity at the Port of Liverpool, due in part to the new unloading system, is strengthening the biomass supply chain for UK Plc. The whole team that has worked on this project is proud of the partnership between Peel Ports and Siwertell, which has contributed significantly to this world-leading development,” concluded Huck.
