Port of Vuosaari to implement world’s largest material handler

The basis of the project is railroad transport from Metsä Fibre's new plant in Äänekoski to Port of Vuosaari, resulting in a considerable increase in pulp transport through the port.

Mantsinen 300, a hydraulic material handling machine launched in the spring of 2017, challenges traditional wire rope cranes by offering a faster work cycle and best productivity in its class.

"This project has ambitious goals in many areas, but I am sure that Mantsinen 300 will show its strength primarily in work cycle speed," said Sales Manager Niko Miettinen of Oy Adolf Lahti Yxpila Ab that belongs to KWH Group. Mantsinen 300 is designed to meet the needs of bulk goods and large panamax vessels, but despite its massive size, it is as agile and accurate as smaller material handling machines.

"The investment was made because we want to lift six pulp bales at a time, when others in Finland lift three or four. Also, Mantsinen 300 was the only machine that meets our challenging requirements: we need an efficient machine to load the massive 40 000 DWT vessels as well as the smaller 4000 t ones.”

According to Miettinen, wire rope cranes were no longer a feasible alternative.

"We wanted to invest in high technology while considerably decreasing the pressure on the need of staff. This machine allows the operator to manage the process further. We also needed a reach of 28 – 30 meters to reach over the vessel. And the certainty that the boom operates well near and deep during loading," Miettinen added.

Mantsinen 300 will have the second generation HybriLift®, an energy recovery system developed and patented for large cranes, which will provide up to 50% of the energy required by the machine.
