South32 alumina production hit 1.29 million t in 3Q16 – level with the previous quarter but 5% on the same period in 2015.
Production at the company’s Worsley Alumina operations in Western Australia was 0.967 million t – a year-on-year fall of 6% on 3Q15 but steady with the previous quarter as hydrate production remained in excess of an annualised rate of 4.5 million t.
Excess hydrate production will be converted into saleable alumina in 4Q16, offsetting an expected fall in hydrate production during a planned calciner outage. Saleable alumina production for FY2017 remains 4 million t. Alumina sales from Worsley totalled 0.96 million t in 3Q16.
Alumina production from the company’s Brazilian alumina operations was 2% down on the same period last year and 3% down on the previous quarter as planned maintenance was undertaken at the refinery and port.
This also saw a 12% fall in alumina sales on the previous quarter, although the company retains its FY2017 sales forecast of 1.3 million t.
