Chinese coal and iron imports slip in October

China’s coal imports fell to a three-month low in October, according to Simpson Spence Young, while iron ore imports fell to an eight-month low.
Coal imports were 21.6 million t in October – the lowest level since July but still a 5.6% rise year on year – Simpson Spence Young said, quoting customs data.
Imports from Australia were 5.4 million t, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 32% as both thermal and metallurgical coal shipments increased. Imports from Indonesia were also up significantly year on year at 3.3 million t – 58% increase.
Meanwhile, iron ore imports fell to 80.8 million t in October – well below September’s record imports of 93 million t – said the shipbrokers, again quoting customs data.
Australian imports fell to 49.9 million t from 60.4 million t in September, although remained 1.4 million t ahead year on year. Brazil shipped 17.9 million t to China, South Africa, 3.4 million t and Canada, 1.2 million t.
