Weekly US rail traffic for the week ending 1 February 2025

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) has reported US rail traffic for the week ending 1 February 2025. For this week, total US weekly rail traffic was 513 622 carloads and intermodal units, up 4.5% compared with the same week last year.
Total carloads for the week ending 1 February were 222 071 carloads, down 0.1% compared with the same week in 2024, while US weekly intermodal volume was 291 551 containers and trailers, up 8.2% compared to 2024.
Five of the 10 carload commodity groups posted an increase compared with the same week in 2024. They included chemicals, up 1332 carloads, to 33 374; grain, up 1151 carloads, to 22 114; and non-metallic minerals, up 672 carloads, to 26 637. Commodity groups that posted decreases compared with the same week in 2024 included coal, down 2849 carloads, to 59 863; metallic ores and metals, down 633 carloads, to 18 815; and forest products, down 506 carloads, to 8271.
For the first five weeks of 2025, US railroads reported cumulative volume of 1 025 664 carloads, up 0.2% from the same point last year; and 1 329 715 intermodal units, up 10.3% from last year. Total combined US traffic for the first five weeks of 2025 was 2 355 379 carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year.
North American rail volume for the week ending 1 February 2025, on 9 reporting US, Canadian and Mexican railroads totalled 325 668 carloads, down 0.4% compared with the same week last year, and 374,743 intermodal units, up 6.8% compared with last year. Total combined weekly rail traffic in North America was 700 411 carloads and intermodal units, up 3.3%. North American rail volume for the first five weeks of 2025 was 3 266 506 carloads and intermodal units, up 6.1% compared with 2024.
Canadian railroads reported 90 301 carloads for the week, down 1.6%, and 71 385 intermodal units, down 1.6% compared with the same week in 2024. For the first five weeks of 2025, Canadian railroads reported cumulative rail traffic volume of 788,036 carloads, containers and trailers, up 5.9%.
Mexican railroads reported 13 296 carloads for the week, up 0.8% compared with the same week last year, and 11 807 intermodal units, up 35.5%. Cumulative volume on Mexican railroads for the first five weeks of 2025 was 123 091 carloads and intermodal containers and trailers, up 16.0% from the same point last year.
