TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced that MOL and its MOL wholly-owned subsidiary MOL Chemical Tankers Pte. Ltd., along with Belgium-based CMB.TECH NV, have decided to jointly own and charter a total of nine Capesize bulkers and chemical tankers that can run on ammonia, a zero-emission fuel.

These will be the world's first ammonia dual-fuel Capesize bulkers and chemical tankers. Among the vessels are three ammonia duel fuel Capesize bulkers jointly owned by MOL and CMB.TECH, scheduled for delivery in 2026-2027 from CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.

Amid the trend toward decarbonisation, ammonia is drawing worldwide attention as a next-generation clean energy source, and the ocean shipping industry is accelerating its moves to strategically utilise ammonia as a fuel. The MOL Group also intends to adopt ammonia, as shown in the chart below, in its "MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2" to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. MOL will continue to pursue these initiatives and contribute to the realisation of a decarbonised society.
