BHP Billiton mines produced 67 million t of iron ore in 3Q16, according to the company’s latest operational report, with 58 million t attributable to the mining giant and the remaining to its partners. Guidance for the 2017 financial year remains unchanged at 265 – 275 million t, of which 228 – 237 million t will be attributable to BHP.
Production levels were flat with 3Q15, as ramp-up at the Jimblebar mine offset lower volumes at Yandi. Production was up 4% on 2Q16, after the completion of rail renewal works near the Newman mine.
The Newman rail works for part of a 24 month rail renewal and maintenance programme that will “support the integrated supply chain’s long-term reliability”, the company said. Work is progressing to schedule.
Looking ahead, BHP said the installation of the new primary crusher and additional conveying capacity at Jimblebar would be complete in the next quarter. Operations at the Samarco mine remain suspended following the failure of the Fundão tailings dam and Santarém water dam last November.
