The terminal will undergo a comprehensive programme of facility upgrades, new equipment deployment, and process digitalisation to enhance the port’s logistics competitiveness.
Boluda Maritime Terminals has secured the concession to operate the public multipurpose maritime terminal at the Príncep d’Espanya wharf in the Port of Barcelona. This strategic concession will strengthen the company’s presence at one of the Mediterranean’s leading logistics hubs. The concession covers an area of 87 425 m2 and 531 m of quay. The successful bid provides for an investment of close to €40 million, of which more than €28 million will be allocated to machinery and cargo-handling equipment, with around €10 million earmarked for upgrading and improving the facilities. The proposal also includes a commitment to handle 1.3 million t of maritime traffic annually, a financial contribution of €1 million and a €0.50-per-tonne increase in the activity fee.
The terminal will be equipped to handle containerised cargo, general cargo, ro-ro traffic, short-sea shipping services, and industrial project cargo, providing the Port of Barcelona with a versatile infrastructure capable of supporting a wide range of logistics chains and industries. The development plan includes resurfacing works, the modernisation of buildings and operational areas, the renewal of utility networks and the reorganisation of storage areas. These improvements will optimise available capacity, enhance operational safety and enable more efficient cargo flows. The transformation of access points will be another key component of the project, with technology-led solutions designed to streamline traffic and reduce waiting times. The new layout will incorporate automated controls, licence plate recognition, OCR technology, and separate routes for lorries, staff, and visitors, enabling smoother management of internal and external traffic.
The investment will also fund the introduction of state-of-the-art equipment to boost productivity and expand service capacity. Planned additions include new STS and mobile cranes, as well as reach stackers, terminal tractors, electric forklift trucks, and specialised cargo-handling platforms.
Reducing environmental impact is one of the project’s core priorities. The roadmap includes the progressive electrification of equipment, the use of energy from renewable sources, the installation of electric vehicle charging points, the deployment of on-site renewable energy generation systems, and measures to minimise water and energy consumption. Together, these solutions will support the Port of Barcelona’s decarbonisation targets and help build supply chains that are more competitive, resilient, and environmentally responsible.
Through this new concession, Boluda Maritime Terminals continues to strengthen its network of port infrastructure and reaffirms its commitment to developing modern, innovative facilities equipped to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s maritime trade.
