Indian ports see surge in coal imports

According to the latest report by the Indian Ports Association (IPA), the country’s top 12 major ports recorded a 19.32% increase in thermal coal imports, reaching 28.28 million t throughout the April - June period this year.

In the April - June period of 2017, the ports handled 23.7 million t of thermal coal.

During this period, nine Indian ports – Kolkata, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal – had all announced a rise in traffic.

With regards to metallurgical coal, the ports increased their handling activities by 6.85% during the 1Q18. It has been reported that, at the 12 ports, metallurgical coal shipments in April - June reached 13.03 million t.
